Last year, we conducted a study of the Fire Helmet Camera when we were at several conferences and with several Fire Depts. throughout the country. The response was unbelievable. Fire Instructors, Fire Inspectors and Fire Chiefs all agreed that the Fire Helmet Camera was a tool that the fire service has been missing for several years. We have had a great response from Fire Depts. all around the country that have purchased them for their dept. The only problem was that there was no SOG's / SOP's for the camera. We have contacted a representative from the State of Maryland's Fire Service Institute to write an SOP for the Fire Helmet Camera. Depts. will be able to download the SOP from our website for free and adhere their depts. needs to it. The biggest issue is hippa laws. With video being the #1 tool in todays internet, Fire Depts. have to be careful of what is posted. The SOP's will be similar to what police depts. have used for their dash cameras since the 1980's.
The Fire Helmet Camera is being used by hundreds of fire depts. throughout the world and is even being used in several arson cases. It's being used in flashover cans and training burns for new recruits to see what their actions were and what can be improved on. When engine companies pull up to the scene and the Captain captures the 1st 5 min. of initial attack, fire investigators are using the footage to help determine origin. With todays technology, we are taking the camera to higher levels. Soon, command will be able to see what is happening from the command post live from inside of the building. Everyone keep your heads up and stay safe!
