Hallo brother!
So let's impove the english way...
We DO have "standing guards" as you named it, but this is only in the bigger towns, with a population of more than 120.000. The rest of us in volunteer - and that with a tradition of more than 140 years. My FD is fundet 143 years ago - and we still try to become a lot older. lol
How many respond do you have each year? We have arrived on a lightly critical level: 594 responds in 2008...
A lot to do and it takes most of my time off work, but it's real FUN! I love to be a firefighter - I think that's the only way you can practice it.
LOVE it or HATE it - there is nothing inbetween...
