Units on scene: Jollyville E34, Austin E34, E25, E33, Quints 38 and 19, Recue 28. I believe AFD also had two battalion chiefs and a safety officer on scene as well but I do not remember their numbers. Austin/Travis County EMS and APD were also onscene. Jollyville E34 was third in after AFD E34 and Quint 38. We arrived to find heavy black smoke showing from the "A" side and the roof line. Jollyville was assigned to secure utilities which were located on the "B" side of the building. I could see AFD at the front door forcing entry at the security roll up gate with a K saw, they also had a line in place there. We made sure the power was shut off and as we rounded the back of the building I heard one of the AFD crews state "we are about to open the back door, it's probably gonna flash after getting fresh air". Shortly after that I heard someone from AFD state "MAYDAY! MAYDAY! Firefighters down at the front of the building!" We hurried to the front and saw the aftermath of the collapse. I appeared to have been the awning covered with clay tiles that collapsed and trapped two Austin firefighters. We made it to the front and it appeared that the AFD brothers had already been pulled out by their crews at the front. Command declared the fire defensive and requested a PAR from all units. Heavy fire was showing from the front now and our engine was assigned to attack the fire with our deck gun. All together we had our deck gun, two 1.75" handlines, two ladder pipes and a ground monitor hitting the fire. This is an older post.
