This is a Chief's nightmare I'm glad they kept there heads and bailed out. I believe this looked like a small to medium deal fire to them. I realy do not believe they knew there was that much extension let alone that much fire still under them. This is why sounding the floor is so important and how many of us do it on single story homes? Hardly anyone does and this is what can happen when you dont if the floor had been sounded they woud have made a discovery of a soft floor that showed its head when ventilated. Fans are our friends and can show the seat of a fire quickly. This is a clasic lower compartment fire and how fast and what can change on you they did nothing wrong. I myself would have backed out to the door to make a safe point. They didnt and thats the attack crews choice and not any of us arm chair quaterbacks.

I am glad everyone made it out and got home to there familes, but thats why when you put the fire out you look for extention before you begain to ventilate if it has not done so already.

I hate those fans. Just open windows to ventilate!

Glad that there are other firefighters that share their experiences so that everyone can learn.
